Managing Traumatic Stress
A traumatic or "critical" incident can be any event that evokes extraordinary emotion and overwhelms one's ability to cope. Just a few examples:
* serious injury to a fellow worker * line of duty death * suicide * armed robbery or shooting incident * serious hurricane, earthquake, or other natural disaster * fatal fire * unusual death of, or violence to, a child * victim of, or witness to, violence * industrial accidents * serious threat of death or harm, such as a hostage situation * witness to or involvement in a serious auto or plane crash * terrorism * many other tragic accidents
Recovery from traumatic stress is facilitated when early intervention is provided by both professional and peer support personnel who are specially trained in established stress intervention techniques. Ideally, an intervention should take place within hours or several days.
This process is not psychotherapy. It is more of an emotional "first aid" procedure, usually conducted in a one to three hour individual or group meeting.
